Aim
Show that love is worth more than any material gifts.
Introduction
Christmas is coming! How do we prepare for Christmas? start with advent calendar – chocolate of course! And advent candle – light it.
General discussion upping the ante about trappings of Christmas stockings, tinsel, crackers, etc.
Have you noticed what is on the table?
Presents! Shall we take a peek inside? but which one?
(Open up huge, brilliantly decorated Christmas bag and display empty bag and another and another getting smaller and smaller and nothing at end … how disappointing!)
(Opens up plastic, newspaper filled bag and gradually assembles the nativity scene, talking to the children about each figure as it is unwrapped)
We all really like having presents. Not always the ‘flashiest’ present that is the best. Christmas – not just about getting, but giving. Time to give to those we love – mums, dads, brothers and sisters, not so much the size or cost, but the love behind the gift that’s special. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Christmas is all about love. The Bible says that God so loved that He gave The first Christmas was not about trees or lights or toys or decorations Christmas was love in action, God giving. Love is not just about presents but action. Can you think about how you could show your love by your actions? Helping at home, tidying room, being kind so this year, as well as getting or giving presents this year, think how you can show love in action.
(Light the candle for the nativity scene)
The giving of gifts is not something man invented. God started the giving spree when he gave a gift beyond words, the unspeakable gift of His Son. (Robert Flatt)
Prayer
Thank you Lord, for the gift of Your love. May we all be shining examples of that love to others. In all the busyness and excitement of the next few weeks, please help us to put Christ back in CHRISTmas remembering that Jesus is the reason for the season.
Amen.
