Aim

To show that even the little we have God can use to save many

Introduction

Good morning children – can anyone remember what topic we covered last month? That’s right the story of David whom God chose to be King.

Drama

All the children are given a sealed brown envelope with nothing in it. 12 children to be given a colored envelope with a note inside saying (crumbs). 1 child to be given an envelope with a note saying (Buns & Fish).

John 6 V 1-14 Feeding the Five Thousand

One day Jesus was on a mountainside with his disciples when he saw a great crowd of people coming toward them, in those days crowds of people would come to listen to Jesus telling stories. Jesus told the disciples to ask the people if any one had any food they could share.

(Ask the children to look in their envelopes to see if they have any food.)

(Bring the boy or girl to the front that has the envelope with food.)

(Tell everyone what is inside the envelope.)

Jesus took the food and blessed it and asked the disciples to give every one share of the food, the disciples said we wouldn’t have enough to go round all these people. Jesus said ask the people to sit down and eat and share.

In an amazing way everyone had a meal and were full, Jesus asked the disciples to collect the left over food.

(Ask the 12 children to open their envelopes and read out what is inside.)

Yes children Jesus blessed a small amount of food and it fed a large number of people. And there were 12 baskets of crumbs left over. Yes children it is an amazing story and the people that Jesus fed that day were amazed also.

Reflection

l wonder what the boy thought when Jesus took his picnic? How could his food make any difference?

I think Jesus wanted to show to the boy that even the little he had was still very important and really could make a difference for good.

And that’s the message for all of us. Like George who is nearly 8 and loves Lego. One day recently he decided that he would like to raise some money for children in need in a poor country. His church has a large hall, so he made a lot of Lego models and with the help of some grownups held an exhibition one Saturday morning. His Mum served coffee and George was there with a jam jar for visitors to make a donation if they wanted to. At the end of the morning he counted up how much he had collected. How much do you think? £102

Enough for a jolly good meal for a lot of hungry children.

A boy. A picnic. A crowd fed.

A boy. Some Lego. A crowd fed.

Prayer

Thank you Jesus for all the wonderful stories in the bible, please help us to share what we have even if it is a small amount. Help us to remember that Jesus can make a difference even when we only have small things to give and that it is the giving that matters. Amen
