Aim
To seek to convey that each one can be a support to others in community.
Introduction
Ask what learning about community, seek feedback about what groups they belong to (family, brownies/cubs, school, sports etc).
Choose eight children and dress them up for jobs:
- Doctor: apron
- Policeman: helmet
- Hairdresser: hairdryer, scissor/comb
- Butcher: apron, maybe sausages!
- Fireman: helmet
- Farmer: wellies, straw
- Postman: jacket
- Mechanic: tools
Invite children to identify their jobs (kids return to sit down, still in kit).
Question: in a community we all have neighbours. Who is your neighbour?
Someone asked Jesus that same question … he told them a story …
Story
Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)
Man down rocky hilly road, thieves beat him up.
Mime: getting beaten up
One man passed did not help, another passes does not help.
Mime: back and forth in 3 different 'hats'
Third person, a stranger, foreigner stops, takes care of him, on donkey etc.
Mime: Third time helps man up, leads him off
Reflection
Theme of we all need to be helpful in our community whether we know folk or not, whether they are like us or not. Everyone is our neighbour.
Prayer
To be added.
Song
Close by playing song on CD (When I needed a neighbour were you there?), suggest children may like to sing along with it.
